How to use this directory
Step 1
Pick a season window
Most aurora destinations are dark enough only between late September and early April. Match a country's best months to your travel calendar before booking.
Step 2
Optimize for clear sky, not just latitude
Higher latitude doesn't beat clearer weather. Inland sites (Abisko, Yellowknife, Fairbanks, Kangerlussuaq) average 30-50% more clear nights than coastal sites at the same latitude.
Step 3
Stay 3-4 nights minimum
Aurora is a probabilistic game. Plan multiple viewing nights and stack a daytime activity (huskies, ice cave, hot pool) that makes weather-bound nights enjoyable too.
